Stuff we like : Simon Davidson

Commissioned by advertising agency Kolle Rebbe, this ad has been made by the Recom team in Stuttgart for InLingua, a language school that offers English courses for German speakers. While this ad will make sense to Germans, it won’t for almost everybody else, so a little explanation might be required: us Germans infamously pronounce the “th” as “z” – but in German the “z”-sound is pronounced with an “s” – hence the “s” is the letter being taken care of in these ads with the punchline “We take care of your th-problem”. Now while jokes are usually not that funny anymore if it takes 5 minutes to explain them, this is still and interesting example of how we composite together photographic and CG elements when making images.

It has been a long time since we last published something in this category where we show our work in detail. We put a lot of work into making our CG images look real! We add lots of small elements both in CG and in post-production and most of them will never be seen unless you are zoomed in at 100%. Read more

When we find the time we like to experiment with making full CGI images for our product-based portfolio. In the past we created a full CGI visual for an Estée Lauder product, this time our New York team have produced a Versace perfume bottle. Read more

Still Life with Fish and Forsythia, Daniel Gordon, 2013
We recently received the latest copy of Foam magazine, which in this issue titled Under Construction, New Positions in American Photography features photographer and artist Daniel Gordon. It is so original! The colours and the patterns, the still life classic composition and object choices, all belong to an inventory of images we are familiar with. It is as if a 19th century Dutch still life painter had taken acid whilst traveling through exotic countries!

Commissioned by Parisian agency Herezie, this advertising campaign for Eparcyl cleaning products has been a great opportunity for us to mix and match different CG software to create realistic elements in a very short time. This jokey advert shows Read more

Nearly 1 year ago we posted on Mad Love a personal project which consisted of a series of perspex light-boxes enclosing different types of pure, simple arrangements of raw materials made in CGI. We had a small cluster of clouds, drips of black goo and splashes of paint. This time we enjoyed modeling some mushrooms and a formation of crystals.
WOW! I stumbled upon Elizaveta Porodina‘s website thanks to one of our guys who is often surfing the net in search of the new and inspiring – and this is certainly an interesting body of work!

Commissioned by advertising agency TBWA Paris, this is the first of a few images made for the launch campaign of the new Nissan Qashqai, which already has been awarded ‘WhatCar?’ car of the year 2014.
The Qashqai is a hugely popular model and this new generation was unveiled about a week before we delivered the visual. Working with such highly anticipated cars was destined to be a little nerve wrecking as the pressure is on, but ultimately a highly enjoyable experience. Our senior retoucher Kate Booker and CGI director Kristian Turner went to Paris twice to present and discuss the project.

All images: Clemens Ascher
Before Christmas I met with photographer Clemens Ascher, who was very kindly helping me with a photographic shoot in Austria, his native land. Clemens has shot for Lincoln a very strong photographic series of images. I told him I intended to write something on him in our blog and when I asked what was his experience of shooting this job, he said: “please do not write about the difficulties of shooting in the heat of the California desert, everybody focusses on that… write about the team, it was a great team to work with and it was the team that made these images what they are” Read more
